Residential solar in Barrhaven

Barrhaven is close to an ideal suburb for rooftop solar, and the reason is boring: the housing is new. Longfields, Stonebridge, Half Moon Bay and Chapman Mills went up from the late 1990s onward, which means large simple roof planes, modern trusses with documented spans, 200 amp services in most of the newer stock, and shingles young enough that reroofing first is not always necessary.

The two constraints here are orientation and the condominium question. A lot of Barrhaven's street grid runs on angles that put the main roof planes southeast and southwest rather than due south, which is a modest production penalty rather than a problem, but it changes the modelling. Townhouse and semi blocks, a large share of the area, often sit under a condominium corporation or a builder agreement that governs anything visible on the roof. Settle that before the engineer is booked.

Barrhaven is inside Hydro Ottawa's territory, so the micro-generation process at 12 kW AC or less applies, with the service layout, the payment and the Electrical Safety Authority Connection Authorization before energization (Hydro Ottawa, DER connection process).

All services

Rooftop solar installation

A grid-connected photovoltaic array on an Ottawa roof, from the engineer's review through the ESA authorization to the day it switches on.

Roof and structural assessment

The engineer's review Ottawa requires before an array goes on, plus the shingle and shading questions that decide whether to proceed at all.

Net metering connection

How an Ottawa array gets connected under a net metering agreement, what the credits are actually worth, and the 12-month expiry nobody mentions.

Home battery storage

Batteries paired with solar for backup and for load shifting, with the Ontario rebate rate and the reasons a battery may not pay for itself.

Send your annual kilowatt hours, the age of your shingles and the roof orientation, and get an indicative range and a straight answer on the rebate question.
