Residential solar in Manotick and rural Ottawa

Rural Ottawa is where ground-mounted solar becomes the better answer. On a property with land, a ground mount can be oriented due south at the optimum tilt, kept clear of tree shading, cleaned and serviced from the ground, and sized without reference to whatever shape the roof happens to be. It also sidesteps the roof penetration and shingle-age questions entirely. The trade-offs are trenching, a longer DC or AC run, and a structure that needs its own foundation design.

That foundation is not a trivial matter here. Much of the Ottawa area sits on sensitive marine clay, and a ground-mount array is a wind-loaded structure on footings that have to work in a soil that moves seasonally and heaves with frost. The engineering requirement the City sets out for solar collector systems, that the design and the on-site field review be done by a professional engineer licensed in Ontario (City of Ottawa, Solar collector systems), is if anything more consequential on a ground mount than on a roof.

Two rural specifics. First, check which distributor bills you, because parts of the city's rural area are not served by Hydro Ottawa and the connection process is not identical between distributors. Second, outage exposure is genuinely higher at the end of a long rural feeder, which shifts the battery conversation from bill savings to keeping a well pump and a furnace running, and a property on a private well loses its water supply the moment the power goes, not just its lights.

All services

Rooftop solar installation

A grid-connected photovoltaic array on an Ottawa roof, from the engineer's review through the ESA authorization to the day it switches on.

Roof and structural assessment

The engineer's review Ottawa requires before an array goes on, plus the shingle and shading questions that decide whether to proceed at all.

Net metering connection

How an Ottawa array gets connected under a net metering agreement, what the credits are actually worth, and the 12-month expiry nobody mentions.

Home battery storage

Batteries paired with solar for backup and for load shifting, with the Ontario rebate rate and the reasons a battery may not pay for itself.

Send your annual kilowatt hours, the age of your shingles and the roof orientation, and get an indicative range and a straight answer on the rebate question.
